Chemotherapy drugs can be given in a variety of different ways. The method of administration of chemotherapy treatments along with the dose is determined by clinical trials, which are done prior to the specific chemo drug being available for commercial use with patients. During this testing process, scientists and doctors determine how specific chemo drugs are absorbed in the body and how they work.

Chemotherapy Administration and Safety course is a relaunch of the existing Chemotherapy Administration course. The case study details the role of the nurse, pharmacist and other advanced practitioners in the administration of chemotherapy. It also discusses the proper way to dispose of remaining chemotherapy agents, the role of personal protective equipment, and hypersensitivity reactions.

The course contains 4 sections:

1) The Challenges and Benefits of Oral Therapy in the Management of Cancer
2) Chemotherapy Administration
3) Chemotherapy Safety Standards
4) Case Study

At the end of this course, learners should be able to:

  • Describe the potential benefits and disadvantages of oral anticancer therapy
  • Identify the management of reactions/toxicities that can occur during the administration of the chemotherapy agent
  • Discuss the safety standards for chemotherapy administration and assess personal and practice adherence to the standards
  • Apply knowledge gained to address clinical situations encountered in actual practice

IMPORTANT NOTE: This course expires on May 16, 2021. Participants must complete all necessary course components by this date.
